Why Time Trackers Fail Without a Desktop Anchor
If your time tracker lives in a browser tab, it is already losing to every other tab you have open.

You open your time tracker. You start a timer. Then a client emails you and you open a new tab. Then Slack pings. Then you check something on Google. Twenty minutes later your tracker tab is buried four layers deep and you have no idea if the timer is still running.

Browser-based tools are built for the browser environment. The browser environment is chaos. Tabs multiply. Sessions expire. Browsers crash. And when your tracker is just another tab, it gets treated like one.
What a Desktop App Actually Changes
A native desktop app sits outside that chaos. It runs at the OS level, not the browser level. It does not disappear when Chrome decides to reload. It does not log you out because your session timed out. It is just there, the same way your calendar app is just there.
The difference sounds small until you lose two hours of tracking because a browser update forced a restart.

This matters most when a client questions your hours. If your screenshot log has gaps because your browser tab went idle at 2pm, those gaps look suspicious even when the work was real.
The Hidden Cost of Convenience
Browser-based trackers sell on convenience. No install required. Works anywhere. Any device.
But freelancers do not usually need anywhere. They need their actual desk, their actual machine, their actual workflow. The install is five minutes. You do it once. After that the app is part of your environment the same way your email client is.
The convenience argument collapses once you realize the inconvenience of reconstructing missing hours at invoice time is far worse than a five-minute install.
What to Check in a Desktop App
Not all desktop apps are built equally. Some are just Electron wrappers around a web app, which means you get the same tab instability with a different shell around it. Real native apps are built for the operating system they run on. Mac apps built with native Mac frameworks. Windows apps built for Windows.
Ask this before you commit: does the timer keep running if I lose internet? Does the screenshot capture keep working if I switch users? Does the app survive a crash without losing my session?
If the answer to any of those is no, you are looking at a browser app in a desktop costume.
The Floating Timer Is the Tell
A good floating widget is hard to build in a browser. It requires OS-level window management. When you see a tracker with a clean, always-on-top floating timer, it usually means the rest of the app is genuinely native too.
That widget is the single most visible sign that the tool was built to stay with you, not to wait for you to come back to it.
