The Tab Gets Closed
You know how it goes. You open Chrome with twelve tabs. Client email, project doc, reference site, your time tracker. Work happens. Tabs pile up. At some point the browser crashes, or you restart, or you just close the wrong tab by accident.

A desktop app can surface notifications at the OS level. That means a reminder to start tracking, or an alert that your timer has been running for four hours with no task change, actually reaches you.
Small things. But they add up over the course of a month.
What to Actually Check When You Evaluate a Tracker
Before you commit to any time tracking tool, ask where it lives. Is it a browser extension? A web app you visit? Or a native application installed on your machine?
Then ask what happens when you lose internet access. What happens when your browser crashes. What happens when you forget the tab is open and close it.
If the answer to any of those is "you lose your tracking," that is a real cost. Not a hypothetical one.
The best time tracker is the one that runs whether or not you remember to babysit it. That is a desktop app, not a tab.
