The Time Block You Fill With the Wrong Kind of Easy
Not all easy work is the same. One kind moves you forward. The other is just procrastination wearing a to-do list.
When Productivity Becomes a Cover Story
You blocked two hours for deep work. You opened your task list and felt the weight of the hard thing sitting there. So you did something else instead. Something small, quick, satisfying. You replied to a few emails. You updated a spreadsheet. You reorganized your project folders.
At the end of the two hours, you had a cleaner inbox and nothing actually finished.
This is the trap. You were productive in the narrow sense. You completed tasks. But none of them were the task. The hard one is still there, unchanged, waiting for tomorrow.
Two Kinds of Easy Work
There is easy work that moves things forward. Answering a quick client question that is blocking their work. Sending a file you have ready. Finishing the last ten minutes of something mostly done.
Then there is easy work that feels like progress but is really avoidance. Reorganizing files that were already findable. Drafting an email you could send in thirty seconds. Doing research on something you already know enough about.
The second kind is the dangerous one because it fills time, creates a feeling of accomplishment, and leaves the important work untouched. You can spend an entire day doing the second kind and have nothing to show for it by evening.
The difference is not complexity. It is whether the task moves you toward the real goal or just occupies you away from it.
How to Catch Yourself in the Act
When you are about to start a task, ask one question: am I doing this because it needs to be done now, or because the other thing is uncomfortable?
If the honest answer is the second one, you are filling your block with the wrong kind of easy.
You do not need to be hard on yourself about it. Just recognize it. Then make a different choice.
What Your Timer Reveals
This is one place where tracking your time actually tells you something about your psychology, not just your hours.
If you run a week's worth of time logs and look at what you tracked during your deep work blocks, the pattern will be visible. If those blocks are full of five and ten minute tasks, email responses, and small admin items, you are not using your deep work blocks for deep work. You are parking easy tasks there because the alternative felt too hard.
Time-Trak shows you this clearly when you review your entries. Not as a judgment. As data. The data tells you which blocks were actually deep work and which ones were avoidance dressed up as productivity.
Once you see the pattern, it is hard to keep pretending it is not there.
The Fix: Name the Hard Thing First
At the start of every deep work block, before you open your task list and start browsing, name the one thing this block is for. Write it down. Start your timer with that label.
Not a list of things you might do. One thing. The hard thing.
Then start it. Not plan it. Not outline it. Start the actual work. Write the first sentence. Open the file and do the first step.
If you stall in the first five minutes, set a ten-minute timer and commit to working on only that task until it rings. Most of the time you will not want to stop at ten minutes because starting was the whole problem.
The Long-Term Cost of the Wrong Kind of Easy
A week of avoidance work leaves you behind on what matters. A month of it leaves you behind enough to feel it. A quarter of it means the proposals did not get written, the system did not get built, the work that would have moved things forward did not happen.
Your billing hours look fine. Your income looks stable. But the work that compounds, the work that builds toward something, never gets the focused time it needs.
That is the hidden cost of filling your blocks with the wrong kind of easy. It is not visible week to week. It shows up six months later when you realize nothing has changed.
Track your time, bill every minute.
